But the iris is not the only thing that has pigmentation in the eye. The retina represents the color brown in pigmented races, instead of the usual orange color less pigmented races. The retina is not visible to the naked eye, but can affect some functional aspects of the eye. Additionally, the sclera and conjunctiva may also have brown pigmented areas in darker skin types.

To distinguish more pigmented races from less pigmented ones, we do not focus primarily on the eyes. To go to the extreme: when we see differences between genetically native African, very dark color faces and Scandinavians, the first thing that strikes us is skin color. And then we will look for differences in the bone conformation of the face. The eyes would not attract attention: in white they would be hypopigmented, but in black they would be highly pigmented. There are other differences: for example, Orientals are usually imperceptibly more pigmented than Caucasians, and it is rare to see blond or blond brown hair. In this sense, the "broken" aspect of the eastern eyes is not an anatomical difference in itself.

Big difference: the great unknown

So far, today's article will not see anything new for my dear readers. Pigmented races, dark eyes; oriental breeds, torn eyes. All we know are the obvious differences to the naked eye, we don't need an ophthalmologist to describe them. But it turns out that eastern eyes have a much more important anatomical feature. This is no longer a question of measurements and measures, but qualitative change; like the six-fingered hand we mentioned earlier. If this were an invisible difference to the naked eye, it would remain a curiosity to the ophthalmologist, but it turns out it is obvious if we know how to look.

Because of these anatomical changes, there is a truly noticeable difference between Oriental and non-Oriental eyes, but surprisingly often it goes unnoticed. To me this feature is more impressive than the ripped aspect. We have a profile diagram of the upper eyelid. Below is the eyeball, and in the upper left corner is the upper eyelid, which is visible in the profile section. There are different structures inside, but now let's look at the red stripe on the right called the "elevator muscle." It comes from behind the eyes and its function is to lift, raise the eyelid.

We see that this muscle transforms into whitish groups called "lifting aponeurosis" that covers, among other areas, the skin. As if it were a chain, the muscle pulls from this aponeurosis, and this, in turn, from the eyelid in the area where it is inserted. Thus, when the eye opens, it moves away from that area. Therefore, the upper eyelid can be divided into two zones. The one that is between the insertion of the aponeurosis and the eyelashes is glued to the eye and takes on this curved aspect.

The superior region is more or less vertical and functions relatively independently of the eye. Let's see how this anatomy translates to the normal aspect of the eyelid. We see that the part of the eyelids that is just above the eyelashes takes on a curved aspect because it rests on the eye and there is no lubricant that "fills" the thickness of the eyelids. This area ends in a characteristic fold, and then the eyelid suddenly changes direction, separates from the eye and moves towards the eyebrows. In very “open” eyes, eyelashes can hide details.

The trick is to notice when the eye looks slightly downward: we will soon see the characteristic palbrabral fold. Now let's look at the eastern eye. We find more or less the same structures. But now we are looking for the aponeurosis, and it does not go to the skin of the eyelid, more or less in the middle, as in the West, but it curves down and is inserted more or less at the height of the eyelashes, almost at the end of the eyelid. This greatly changes the morphology of the eyelids. The fat, drawn in yellow, which fills and gives thickness to the eyelid, is “trapped” at the top of the European eye.

Therefore, for a European, the part of the eyelid that is below the crease does not contain fat, there is a very thin eyelid attached to the eye. In the non-oriental eye, fat has no anatomical barrier and spreads throughout the entire eyelid. There is no palbrabral fold and the skin is not attached to the eye, the characteristic curvature is not defined.
