The Last of Us: why everything ended the way it should. Detailed analysis of The Last of Us: Part II trailer - will Joel die

  • 18.08.2019

The first trailer for the sequel to one of the best video games in history, the legendary The Last of Us was shown at the recent PlayStation Experience a month ago. I didn't have time to cut this tape since I was busy moving and cutting other videos, but now, after the second trailer of Logan, which looks damn similar to the adventures of Joel and Ellie, I broke down and cut this tape to tell you that we were shown in the first trailer of The Last of Us 2.

I'd like to start by saying that I'm a crazy fan of the studio's work. Naughty Dog and Uncherted 4 showed us what they will be like next games studios. And given my love for post-apocalypse, horror and the theme of survival, I understand what a masterpiece the second part of The Last of Us will be. This video will contain very important plot spoilers for the first part, since without touching on the story of the first part it is difficult to talk about the second.

The trailer opens onto a view of a dense forest. In the game universe, nature has taken precedence over the achievements of civilization and now such gorgeous landscapes are visible almost everywhere. This is what makes the adventures in The Last of Us unforgettable. Right from the start, this thick vegetation lets us know that this game will squeeze all the juice out of the PlayStation4 Pro, despite the fact that this video looks like a pre-render - it’s not, Naughty Dog are known for their meticulous attitude to in-game details, so this is definitely the game engine, and this teaser itself looks like part of an in-game cutscene.

The singing of birds, crickets and other living creatures adds not only atmosphere, but also life to this jungle. Most likely, the game's ecosystem will become wider and much richer. Then the flawless green picture begins to take on the harsh scars of reality.

Pay attention to these marks on the tree, which was placed in the foreground of this frame for a reason. They look like the mark of a clawed paw. In addition to moss on the tree, you can also notice a fungus, which reminds us of the terrible catastrophe that destroyed civilization.

Then the camera moves away and a trace of a faded civilization appears before our eyes in the form of houses, cars and road signs. On which you can see the logo of the Cicadas, an organization that has enormous influence in the world of the game. The Cicada logo is quite an important detail in this trailer, it represents their lair. Obviously, they will also play a key role in the plot of the second part.

In case you forgot, at the end of the first part, Joel carried out a bloody massacre in their laboratory, kidnapping Ellie from the operating table. Obviously, in this part the Cicadas will hunt them. However, Ellie, judging by the footage below, intends to do the same.

Then we see the logo of the brilliant studio Naughty Dog, which gave us Uncharted and Crash Bandicoot and Uncharted with Crash inside. By the way, the studio’s first logo did not look so laconic, but it immediately made it clear who was here best developer. And then we are shown Ellie’s shaking hands and I just instantly saw a mirror parallel with Logan.

Well, let’s immediately plunge into speculation; such a tremor may indicate several probable reasons. You remember from the first part that Ellie has Immunity to CCI or Cordyceps cerebral infection or in simple words– a fungus that turns people into bloodthirsty monsters. But as scientists said, a fungal growth still formed in her brain, which can lead to various disorders. Perhaps the tremor is a consequence of such a fungal disorder.

This could also indicate psychological trauma that Ellie is finding difficult to cope with. Many have suggested that mass kill cicadas, whose corpses are scattered throughout the house, brought her nerves into such a shaky state, however, at the time of the game, Ellie is already 19 years old, and all her life she has been surviving in a post-apocalyptic world, it is unlikely that murders leave scars in her psyche, most likely it is something other. But I will say more about this a little later.

We see that Ellie knows how to pull herself together and clench her white-knuckled fist, oh yes, I can’t stop enjoying the graphics. She calms down and starts tuning her guitar. We immediately notice the difference from Ellie, whom we are accustomed to from the first part. She got a new tattoo, right where the very bite is located, making it clear that she is immune. You may notice redness on the skin underneath the butterfly tattoo. The tattoo itself is also quite remarkable; its sketch has been circulating on the Internet for a long time.

The drawing is a combination of nature with the theme of change, movement and balance. You can notice that the two branches of the plants look like a black and white Yin Yang sign, meaning movement and the desire for a balance of opposites. And this is not without reason, at the end of the first part we saw how Joel spat on all of humanity in order to save Ellie. This act cannot be clearly called either good or bad. It is the absence of clear extremes that carries the meaning of Yin-Yang.

At the site of the bite there is an image of a butterfly or rather a moth. Both the butterfly and the moth always mean transformation, but if the butterfly symbolizes blossoming and life, then the moth, on the contrary, is a symbol of death. This placement on the hand may refer to physiological changes in Ellie herself, but it is possible that this is only a reminder of the traumas that changed her, most likely death Riley. It’s not just that we were introduced to their touching story in the DLC.

Most likely, Ellie got a tattoo on this hand to hide her unusual immunity from prying eyes, because a bite on her hand instantly reveals her identity, and judging by what happened at the end of the first part, she will definitely be hunted. From the mouth of the game's producer Neil Druckman, we know that the main theme of the second part will be a mirror image of the first. If in the first part the main theme was Joel's fatherly love for Ellie, which appeared throughout the story, then in this part the theme will be Ellie's hatred.

By the way, it is also noteworthy that the very first teaser for the game appeared back in September, but no one even paid attention to it. A drawing of Ellie’s hand, with plants growing from its veins and moths hovering around, has been leaked online. It is noteworthy that in the background you can see tree roots pointing down. That is, it seems that Ellie's hand is underground. The knife in her hand speaks of a hostile attitude and this picture, with its symbolism, already gives us some idea of the synopsis of the game.

Ellie, angry at the loss of someone close to her, as evidenced by the hand pointed underground and the moths, goes in search of retribution, which can be understood by the knife in her hand, and her hatred and anger, along with the fungus in her brain, begin to change her, turning her into a wild one. and an aggressive beast, which the plants in her veins can also symbolize. We can also notice fresh blood on her hands, which means that it was she who carried out the massacre of cicadas in this house.

By the way, pay attention to the house - it looks old and abandoned, so this is definitely not the base of the Cicadas, maybe Ellie deliberately put their logo on the sign to lure them into a death trap. But the symbolic Yin-Yang in her tattoo still suggests that she has not become a villain and has not lost her personality, but is fighting her natural essence while keeping herself in control. Playing the guitar can actually be something like meditation.

The song Ellie starts singing is a song called Through the Valley young performer Shawn James and his bearded band from Arkansas - Shawn James and the Shapeshifters. And such a choice musical accompaniment very symbolic. This song begins with the words of the 4th verse of the biblical psalm number 23. “Even if I walk through the valley of the shadow of death.” Surely you can remember this verse from the famous song by old-school rapper Coolio – The Gangster’s paradise.

Only this song does not repeat the meaning of biblical verses and instead of seeking peace in God's help, is about surviving on your own in a world full of destruction and pain.

The lyrics of this song seem to retell the plot of this game:

I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I am not afraid of evil because I am already blind to it,
Common sense and a gun calm me down
After all, I know that I will kill the enemies who come for me.
And I will walk the earth forever and ever.
But I will no longer walk the righteous path because of sin.
I met the man from the hilltop
That he called himself the savior of people, he came to save the world from destruction and pain,
But I said that it is impossible to save the world from itself.
I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I am not afraid of evil, for I am blind to it.
I walk next to the pool that heals my soul, but I know that after death my soul is cursed.

Apparently, Joel kept his promise after all. The song, the tattoo, the promo shot, and the overall tone of this trailer already give us huge fodder for speculation about the game's plot. But that's not all. In the next square we can see the room in which Ellie is and there are several interesting details. Firstly, the posters that cover the walls immediately catch your eye. And there are no less of them behind Ellie’s back.

I've carefully looked at each of them and they don't seem to carry any interesting details, they are just unusual names of rock bands and their albums, but knowing Naughty Dog's love for easter eggs on posters, I still think that one of them carries some symbolism. Namely, the one that hangs on the right wall, closer to the entrance that Joel will approach.

Shows off on the poster large inscription- Theseus. If you are familiar with ancient Greek mythology, then you probably remembered the story about the labyrinth of the Minotaur, which I recently recalled in the theory of the series Westworld. So, in short: this legend tells about the brave Theseus, who defeated the minotaur and successfully got out of the labyrinth thanks to Ariadne and her thread. The very idea of Ariadne's thread, which helped Theseus find his way, perfectly reflects the concept of cooperative gameplay. And as you know, The Last of Us is distinguished by the presence of a satellite.

Neil Druckman, as part of the presentation of the game's trailer, also said that this time Ellie will be the main playable character. However, nothing was said about Joel, and videos from motion capture sessions of Ashley Johnson, who plays Ellie, appear on the Internet, but for some reason there is still no video of Troy Baker, who gave us Joel. Fans have already started building theories around this trailer and judging by one of them, Joel is dead. And in the trailer we only see a hallucination of Ellie. This is evidenced by some of the details in this trailer.

His very appearance is quite strange, his blurred silhouette appears in the midst of a bright light in the doorway - this scene is similar to the symbolic light at the end of the tunnel, which appears in various religious interpretations of the afterlife.

Then we are shown the details of Joel’s clothes and, despite the fact that the events of the game take place in a post-apocalyptic world, they look perfectly clean and do not have the slightest traces of “survival,” Joel’s hands and his gun are also impeccably clean. We never saw his face in the trailer; we were only shown a small part of it, which is also quite strange. The phrase he uttered was also strange: “What are you doing? Do you really want to go through with this? And it’s strange in that it’s like the voiced thought of Ellie, who is trying to justify her actions and motivate herself to continue her bloody path. She says that she won’t stop until she kills every single one of them. Her gaze definitely radiates incredible anger and it even seems like she’s about to cry.

The death of Joel, who became the closest person to her, is the ideal motivation for Ellie’s bloody retribution. And if he is dead, then his appearances could be similar to the appearances of the Joker in Arkham Knight - you must admit, this was a very cool gameplay element. But, to be honest, I don’t want to believe in this theory, since leaking such a plot twist would ruin one of the most emotional moments of the entire game, Naughty Dog can’t spoil it key moment in the very first trailer. They most likely want to confuse the audience so that the game exceeds all expectations and gives players many plot surprises.

Perhaps this introduction of Joel was done deliberately to relegate him to the background, since if he were at the center of this trailer, players would unwittingly consider him the main character of this part. However, we can't ignore the fact that there's something wrong with this trailer, it all looks too unrealistic, like the whole guitar playing scene is Ellie's fantasy or hallucination. This is also evidenced by the details - for example, Ellie's hairstyle is exact copy hairstyles of Tess, who sacrificed herself after being bitten by an infected. Moreover, she was bitten on the neck; you can see that in this place Ellie also has a mark similar to a bite.

Ellie's shirt is the same shirt that we saw her best friend Riley in from the Left Behind add-on. Riley also died in front of Ellie's eyes and hardly anyone could find her shirt. And the window in the room is very similar to the window from the menu of the first part. That is, it’s as if all the details of this scene are like vivid memories or hallucinations. Perhaps a fungus that has grown in Ellie’s brain is the cause of such clouding of reason.

Ellie obviously wants to destroy all the Cicadas, judging by her menacing statement, and Joel’s calm tone may be evidence of the struggle between her two opposites, which is indicated by the Yin-Yang on her hand. But if Joel is alive, then what will be her motivation for retribution?

On one of the in-game posters in Uncharted 4, players may have noticed a rather interesting Easter egg. The poster shows a pregnant girl who looks a lot like Ellie. The name American Daughters - American daughters, is consonant with the American Dreams comic book series from Dark Horse, and it is their logo that appears on this poster. So there is a possibility that Naughty Dog thus announced a new series of comics in the universe, telling what would happen before the second part of the game.

Perhaps Ellie found love and, like Joel at the beginning of the first part, lost a lot important person. Recent promotional art for the game shows Ellie playing a guitar as soldiers dressed in military uniform approach her. If you look closely, it looks like Ellie is pregnant in this promo shot as well. Pay attention to the batons in the hands of the soldiers, which may indicate that they need Ellie alive. Perhaps the military or the Cicadas got to Ellie and kidnapped her, and the child in her womb became the object of laboratory research. And again I hear someone already clicking on their keyboard, typing the comment “But Ellie is a lesbian! 11! 11!!” Well, in fact, it’s quite difficult to say for sure about her sexuality, because kissing Riley at the age of 14 can only be a way to express your friendly feelings. And no one has canceled bisexual orientation either, so there is no point in referring to this. There is a possibility that during the 5 years of Tommy's quiet life, she met someone with whom she fell in love and with whom she had a child. And this someone could become a victim of the Cicadas, who now have to face the wrath of Ellie.

Some fans have suggested that the gas mask on the heroine of this poster indicates that it is not Ellie, since Ellie is immune, but the gas mask protects not only from cordyceps spores. Yes, there is a possibility that this is her mother, whose story will be told in the American Daughters comic. It is also worth drawing your attention to the similarity of some scenes in this trailer with debut trailer first part. It also started with a beautiful green picture. Then we saw an abandoned house, a similar window, a bed, a bloody hand and close-up legs True, in that trailer we were shown infected people, but here they only talk about cordyceps as fungal formations on trees.

The trailer ends with Ellie’s phrase, which in the original sounds very interesting: Every last one of them. As if referring to the name of the game – The Last of Us. This may hint at a kind of mirror parallel with the plot of the first part. It would be cool if the second part was called The Last of Them. However, part 2 in the title clearly indicates that this is a direct continuation and we have to find out what happened after the ending of the first part.

There is not a single absolutely “kind” person left in the world of The Last of Us. Anyone who survived this post-apocalyptic hell had to sacrifice at least some of their humanity. Or the whole thing. Against the backdrop of such moral decadence, Joel is presented, at first glance, as a positive character. However, some of us long years tormented by the question - what if main character Is TLoU also the main villain?

The prologue makes sure that every player is on Joel's side. He tries with all his might to save his daughter Sarah, but in vain. Of course, such a loss, coupled with the insignificant fact of the end of the world, almost completely destroys him as a person. Ultimately, the protagonist of TLoU will recover from the blow of fate, but the path will be long and thorny.

Where to begin? Yes, since the main life principle of Joel 2.0 (after Sarah) is “The end justifies the means.” And this already looks like the Inquisition. The positive protagonist single-handedly kills almost all the Fireflies, but in any other game (like the same Far Cry) they would definitely become resistance that must be supported in all endeavors. And indeed: “Fireflies” fight against militaristic tyranny, ruling topic, what is left of America - why not la Resistance?

The same one surgery could have saved the whole world, because Ellie is a rare, one might even say, unique example of complete immunity against the insidious zombie fungus Cordyceps, who suddenly decided that with the help of people you can achieve much more than relying on some ants. But here’s the problem: the intervention involves removing a tangible part of the brain, and this is certain death.

The adoptive father could not allow a repetition of Sarah’s scenario, so without any doubt he cut out all the “good” things - you can even do it without quotes - good resistance. Hope for humanity is now 0.1% instead of 1%, but dad is happy, and so is his daughter: in this world there will be no more school, university, work, taxes and pensions. No obligations, just strum your guitar and poke rare clickers in the throat with scissors.

It’s like in the old MMM advertisement: “I’ve been burned so many times...” Having accepted Ellie, Joel again revealed his healed heart to the world, and out of pure selfishness he could not allow new blows to the wounded organ. Therefore, everyone went under the butcher knife of fate - not only the fighting squads of the “Fireflies”, which put up worthy resistance (even on the walking Normal, the final had to be completed a couple of times), but also the defenseless surgeons, as if this was the work of the doctors all over again.

Do you think in Joel’s biography this is the first inhumane sacrifice in the name of the future innocent joys of fatherhood? You are wrong. From conversations with his brother, and from some omissions, it becomes clear that at the beginning of the apocalypse, Joel and Tommy were classic raiders - no better than those who repeatedly ambushed Ellie and Joel himself during TLoU. On the other hand, the brothers simply killed people, but did not eat them, like David. And thanks for that.

Ultimately, Tommy could not stand it any longer and joined the Fireflies to, so to speak, atone for the sins of his dubious past. And Joel remained a post-apocalyptic homeless loner, for whom the ends justify the means.

At the same time, Marlin, the leader of the resistance, also cannot be called a model of impeccable moral purity. She argued that the girl would have agreed to the sacrifice if she had known that the fate of all humanity depended on it. Yes? Why then didn’t anyone ask Ellie before going into anesthesia sleep?

No one was interested in the girl’s opinion, and Joel simply interrupted those on whom the return to normal life of the entire planet depended. Of course, based solely on the specifics of the story, the main villain is of course the cannibal David and his thugs. But from the point of view of universal justice, Joel is at least worthy of being an auxiliary.

It just so happens that humanity thinks in archetypes. Roughly speaking, we all still have the beginnings of a collective mind - general ideas about heroes, villains, wisdom, death, God... Collective unconscious. " The collective unconscious contains everything spiritual heritage human evolution, reborn in the brain structure of each individual“- wrote the analytical psychologist Carl Jung, the famous colleague of Sigmund Freud, who went further than his ideological inspirer. If Freud blamed problems with sexuality for all the problems of humanity, then Jung plunged into the very depths of his research human soul and came out knee-deep in myths, symbols and archetypes.

Exploring the plot TheLastofUs, following Jung we descend to the very bottom of the human soul. Be careful, there are a lot of spoilers!

"In the Beginning was the Thing"

There are many parallel universes, did you know? But wait, point your finger at your temple, scientific treatises have been written about this for several millennia. Each person lives in his own world and perceives the events happening around him exclusively in his own way. One can come across parallel universes in one form or another in Plato, Lem, Berkeley, and Hawking, after all. The essence of each of us is our brain and our memory. We think, therefore we exist. No memory - no person. Therefore, our soul is the totality of everything that we remember. The smell of hay in grandma's village, the taste of an apple from the orchard, the pain of falling off a bicycle for the first time, sadness for someone who has gone to another world. to a loved one- all this is our soul, the most valuable thing in each of us.

And each of us reacts to current events in our own way, according to the laws of our own universe. One in the store will choose Apple juice, because he will remember that same apple in the garden from childhood, another will never buy a blue car, because the car of blue color killed his beloved cat.

Having lost his beloved daughter at the very beginning, Joel purely instinctively closes himself off from Ellie, immediately saying key phrase: “I don’t care about you at all.” In this way, the unconscious tries to protect its carrier.

We choose a lot of things in our lives unconsciously. Hawking even argues that such a choice is not a choice at all, and everything is actually predetermined. " Each of us perceives abstract and general provisions individually, in the context of your own mind. The reason for such fluctuation (inconstancy of meaning) is that general concept perceived in an individual context and therefore understood and used individually", writes Jung in his work " Approach to the unconscious».

Symbols of the collective unconscious often come to us in dreams. It is often unclear to the average person where this or that image came from in a dream, but if you dig deeper into the history of mankind, the meaning appears.

Humanity

One of Jung's fundamental archetypes is the “Shadow,” the unconscious manifestation of everything we strive to hide under the mask (“Persona,” as the psychologist calls it) that we wear in society. The shadow is in each of us and is closest to the conscious. To put it bluntly, we are all schizophrenics. And when “the angels come to judge us for our sins,” they will meet our Shadows.

But in The world Last of Us angels didn't come. And the Shadows broke free in their most perverted forms.

Using the excuse of simple survival, the remaining people succumb to the Shadow and do things they would never do before. Society is destroyed, masks are torn off.

Archetypes are nothing more than our memories of the past of our ancestors. Just as an embryo in a woman’s body goes through all stages of human evolution, so our mind carries within itself absolutely the entire cultural experience of humanity. Since primitive times, when we did not try to realize what we see, but simply took it on faith.

« As scientific understanding grows, our world is becoming increasingly dehumanized, writes Jung. — Man feels isolated in space because he is now separated from nature, not organically included in it, and has lost his emotional “unconscious identity” with natural phenomena. Gradually they lose their symbolic involvement. Now thunder is not the voice of an angry God, and lightning is not his punishing arrow" But here, presumptuous humanity, which had long ago lost contact with nature, finally found it. Persistent loach on screensaver The screen The Last of Us sneaks through an open window into a man's home. The best metaphor a video game could have.

Direct speech

Carl Gustav Jung

About the archetypes of the collective unconscious

“We convince ourselves that we have “conquered nature” with the help of reason. But this is just a slogan - the so-called conquest of nature turns into overpopulation and adds to our troubles the psychological incapacity for the necessary political reactions. And people can only quarrel and fight for superiority over each other.

Can we say after this that we have “conquered nature”? Since any change must begin somewhere, you must experience and bear it within yourself. individual. Real change must begin within the individual, and that individual can be any of us. No one can look around expecting someone else to do something they don't want to do themselves. But since no one seems to know what to do, perhaps each of us should ask ourselves: maybe my unconscious mind knows what can help us? Clearly the conscious mind is unable to do anything useful in this regard. Man today is painfully aware of the fact that neither his great religions nor his many philosophies provide him with that powerful inspiring ideal that provides the security he needs in the face of the present state of the world.”

Any good work carries archetypal motifs. Otherwise, passing through the filter of the consumer’s mind, it will simply fall apart and remain incomprehensible.

Those " political reactions”, about which Jung writes, in the world of “The Last of Us”, nature itself led the indecisive person. The shadows of the survivors immediately broke free: it was with their help that people understood how to preserve their humanity and survive. Someone began to eat their own kind, someone went to get a vaccine from the corpses of children. It is unlikely that they would do this in a normal world, but the world has changed. The unconscious saved them, while the conscious could not do anything. And Joel in this system is one of the last who did not succumb to the Shadow. At first.

The last of us

« You will do what I say. Clear?" - Joel makes out with Ellie on the shore. " Yes, you're in charge here“,” Ellie humbly answers him. From the very beginning, it seems that Joel has succumbed to the Shadow like everyone else: along with Tess, a friend and probably lover, he walks over corpses for personal gain, justifying it as survival. To a cruel world- cruel residents.

He is completely independent, his actions are unshakable, he is the boss in this world. But only until the Child appears in his life and plunges him even deeper into the Shadow.

At first, Ellie enjoys every little thing: the sunny forest, the chirping cicadas... but winter will change everything. And then, when she sees giraffes for the first time, she will no longer be able to rejoice like a carefree child.

The “Child” archetype has always played an important role in the collective unconscious of humanity. It is present in every third myth, is the basis of many religions, and is important for culture literary works often begin or end with the birth of a baby. In his work “The Divine Child,” Jung characterizes this archetype as spacious “ less small and more big" This image has become so ingrained in the unconscious that the symbolism of birth has become a cliché: if a child is born in a movie or video game, then, most likely, the main character is about to admit his infantilism, stop wrapping his snot around his fist and take on the task of saving the world. The closest example is Beyond:TwoSouls, 90% consisting of this kind of clichés, which, however, are not connected into a single story.

With all this, the Child is often abandoned and not needed: best examples- the myth of Romulus and the tale of Mowgli. " Nature, the instinctive world itself, takes care of the child: he is fed and protected by animals. "Child" means something growing into independence. It cannot take place without turning away from its origins. Therefore, abandonment is not only concomitant, but simply a necessary condition ", writes Jung.

The world in which Ellie and Joel live is empty and therefore very contrasting. In emptiness it is much easier to highlight some details and motives.

Like each of us, Joel lives in his own personal universe. And in this universe, he is the Hero, and Ellie is the Child, who only emphasizes the image he himself invented and takes Joel further and further away from the essence of his psychological problems, into the Shadow. At first, Joel rejects her, but then gets used to it and begins to see her as his daughter. Instead of finally letting go of the memories of his daughter, the old man simply replaces her Ellie, thereby dulling the pain of loss.

Bill, a homosexual and a psychopath, was able to find himself in the church only after the end of the world, when people no longer cared about God. For Joel, Ellie became such a church.

While Ellie is rapidly growing mentally and in the eyes of the player she herself is turning into a Hero, Joel is only degrading, sticking out his ego more and more. He could have forgotten about his tragedy, but his subconscious replays the death of his only daughter over and over again before his eyes, and Joel simply does not know how to deal with it. He succumbs to the Shadow - everything that he previously hid in the depths of his subconscious. And even after Ellie saves his life and proves that she has grown up, Joel, consumed by his inner demons, deceives his companion by saying the most important phrase in the game: “ I swear" In his universe, Ellie is still the Child and he is the Hero. And it's really scary.

The story of the last of us ends with a catastrophic deception, a terrible human tragedy.

Death. No man can accept it, because no man can understand. But at least someone is trying. Joel is not trying, but is only deceiving himself.

The Last of Us is the story of a broken man. The story of a man who could not overcome his psychological problem. The one who is afraid to accept the pain. The Last of Us is not a hero's story at all. This is the story of a coward. And such a story could not end with anything other than “I swear.” The ending is perfect, and most games are far from that.

But maybe things will get better. It’s not for nothing that later, after passing, Ellie’s knife appears on the windowsill from the splash screen, which can be used to cut the vine making its way into the room. If Joel is lost to humanity, then she is his last hope. Divine child. It's not over yet.

* * *

That's the beauty of The Last of Us. Any good story woven from archetypal images and motifs, but only truly brilliant things do not slide into farce. Joel is not a Hero at all, and Ellie is not a Child. They are not ready to sacrifice their world for the sake of others. They - ordinary people with a complex, often incomprehensible psyche, like all of us. They - one of us. Therefore, to some extent, the Russian-language name is even more successful than the original one.

As a young man, Joel married and had a daughter, Sarah. Immediately after the birth of their daughter, his wife left Miller. Burdened with a daughter, Joel did not have the opportunity to continue his education in college.

They started life in Texas in Austin County. Joel began working in construction to support his family and wanted to start his own business. He played the guitar well and had large collection music, because in his youth he wanted to become a singer. Joel often went hiking with his daughter.

Epidemic:

Before the outbreak of the fungal epidemic, 12-year-old Sarah, by the way a football player, gave her father a watch for his birthday. When the epidemic broke out, Joel tried to save his daughter by leaving town with Tommy. After their car was involved in an accident, they went on foot, meeting a soldier on the way who was ordered to kill civilians. Sarah died from loss of blood, and Joel was saved by his brother.

A fungal epidemic has wiped out millions of people, changing their lives forever.

Life of a Mercenary:

Twenty years later, Joel became a smuggler carrying drugs and weapons through the quarantine zone in Boston. Some time after his daughter's death, Miller became brutal killer, tormentor. He owned almost all types of weapons. He had black hair and a beard. In memory of Sarah, Joel wears the watch she gave him.

Miller met Tess, with whom he began working as a smuggler.

Cases forced the couple to appear beforeQueen of the Cicadas (terror organization). They made an agreement with her. Marlene promised to return the weapons stolen from them in double the amount if they brought a certain “cargo”, a girl named , to the group of “Cicadas” waiting in the Capitol.

Arriving at the Capitol, the mercenaries found a dead group of Cicadas. They fell into the military's trap. Tess was infected and sacrificed herself to give Joel and Ellie a chance to leave and find Tommy, who must know about the Cicada base. Miller promised to fulfill Tess's last request, to bring the girl to her destination.

Travel with Ellie:

Joel took Ellie to his crazy old friend Bill, who had a car in which they left town. Ambushed by thugs, Joel crashes his car.

After that, they met the brothers Henry and the boy Sam, with whom they continued their journey. One morning Sam woke up infected and attacked Ellie. Henry killed his brother and then killed himself.

Soon Joel and Ellie arrived in Jackson County where he lived with his wife Maria in a small community. Joel admitted to his brother that the girl was immune and asked him to complete the task for him, to bring the girl to the Cicadas. Having learned about this, Ellie rode off on a horse and Miller and his brother follow in her footsteps. He found her in the house reading a book. The mercenary admitted that he was afraid of losing Ellie, like he lost his daughter.

You're right! You are not my daughter! And I'm not your daddy! This is where our paths diverge!

When Joel calmed down, he decided to go with Ellie himself, having learned the location of the Cicada base at the University of Colorado.

When they arrived, the couple learned that the Cicadas had returned to Our Lady of Salt Lake City Hospital.

After getting into a small mess, Joel was injured after falling from the balcony. He for a long time lay in serious condition, and Ellie took care of him.

When Joel woke up, not finding Ellie nearby, he went in search of her. He captured two people and extorted from them the position of the girl, eventually killing the prisoners. Miller found Ellie hacking away at the gang leader, hugging her like his own daughter.

The mercenary led Ellie to her destination in Salt Lake City in the spring.

Marlene was going to get a vaccine against the virus with the help of the girl, but Ellie had to die. Miller was against this. During the journey, Joel began to treat the girl as his daughter whom he had lost.

The mercenary broke into the operating room, killing everyone who tried to extract the vaccine from the girl, including Marlene, taking with him.

Joel lied and swore to the girl when she woke up from anesthesia that there were a lot of such children with immunity and they were of no use.

Together they returned to Tommy, trying to return to normal life.
