The best system camera. Rating of mirrorless cameras with interchangeable lenses

  • 01.10.2019

Recently, full-frame mirrorless cameras with interchangeable lenses have become popular around the world. People often choose this type of photographic equipment. This rating, which was compiled in 2017, as well as a large number of positive reviews confirm these words. The cameras are easy to use and functional.

The creators achieved this thanks to the rapid development of modern technologies, which are actively used in the development of new models. So what is a mirrorless camera?

Mirrorless cameras are not much different from DSLR devices. The main feature of such cameras is that they lack an optical viewfinder and a block of mirrors. But all other parameters that attract buyers remained unchanged.

Mirrorless optics have an accurate and fast operating mode, impressive size matrix, interchangeable lenses are provided in large quantities and have many different functions. In most models, such functions are of a high technical level and quality. But the advantages of full-frame mirrorless cameras don't end there. Compared to a DSLR camera, they are compact in size and light in weight. This makes the device mobile and makes it possible to take the camera with you on a trip or on an excursion.

Below are the best mirrorless devices according to the 2017 rating.

Panasonic Lumix g5 (review)

Is a true digital evolution. The top-best with an interchangeable lens is a model developed by Panasonic. Four years ago, customers were introduced to the first model of this digital line called Panasonic Lumix G1. The camera’s functions are quite good, and the device itself has earned great popularity among both professional photographers and beginners . Interestingly, after the release of the model G3 the company immediately released Lumix G5. The G4 model was simply not released for sale, and the reason for this was the superstitiousness of the Japanese organization Panasonic.

Benefits of Lumix G5

Everyone will find a wide variety of reviews on the Internet. and reviews that are dedicated to this camera model with interchangeable lenses. Owners pay special attention to design: strict style, smooth lines, calm colors. The shape of the G5 camera is made for user convenience. The large protrusion is designed to make it comfortable and convenient to hold the device in your hands. The flash, viewfinder and many buttons are reminiscent of a DSLR camera.

Price – approximately 22,000 rubles. This is a relatively small cost for a good mirrorless camera.

Sony a6500 (review)

Camera made by Sony, is one of the main favorites of the public. The cameras that were released in 2017 have added another great new product to their ranks. The camera released by Sony is attractive, always produces high-quality images, impressive functionality and a long service life. The company spent a lot of time in the global technology market, which allowed it to gather a large number of fans.

The a6500 camera looks aggressive, it does not have smooth lines, there is angularity. This makes it clear that the device was not created for entertainment, but for professional work. The camera consists of a magnesium body, which is designed to keep dust and moisture out. This is a functional camera that will not let you down even in bad weather conditions.

Advantages

  1. The camera has a new generation processor. This is necessary to get more smooth pictures.
  2. The touch screen is combined with a processor. These elements have good performance.
  3. Using the camera you can get high-quality pictures in jpeg format.
  4. The user will be able to make videos in two formats – Full HD and 4K.
  5. With the processor discussed above, you can process video and play everything in the highest quality.
  6. The camera has built-in wi-fi and Bluetooth. This makes it possible to synchronize devices with any media at a distance.
  7. Replaceable lens.
  8. The camera has a 4D Focus system. The user receives interesting functions that he can use automatically - for example, detect moving objects over the entire area of the frame, track the pupils of the eyes. The photographer does not need to do this himself - the camera will do everything itself.

The device is modern and advanced, which is why its price starts from 110 thousand rubles. This camera is suitable for professional photographers, but amateurs can also quickly master it.

Olympus OM-D E-M 1 Mark II (review)

This camera is the company's flagship. Olympus is known all over the world. She recently released a camera that has wide functionality. The company stated that this camera will surpass all SLR representatives. Olympus spent 4 years developing this model. The body is hybrid. It is much smaller than a SLR camera, but its dimensions exceed a large number.

Advantages

The camera is not only compact, but also portable. The device has great functionality. Any photographer will create mesmerizing photographs, if he has such a useful camera with many functions.

Canon EOS M5 (review)

The Canon device is a smaller copy of a SLR camera. The design is made in the best traditions of the Canon corporation. The camera has smooth curves and no sharp corners. The shape of the Canon camera is designed to be comfortable for the user. The device is easy to hold in one hand.

Advantages

The disadvantages of the Canon camera include the fact that it shoots video in MP4 format. Typically, 2017 models produce videos in Full HD or 4K format. Compared to other models, this device loses ground a little due to the above reason. Price starts from 110,000 rubles. If you study reviews on the Internet, you can conclude that this Canon camera is suitable for photographers of all ranks.

Olympus PEN-F (review)

The last model on this list. The main highlight is the design: the camera is made in retro style. The camera has chrome surfaces and leather lining. This makes the camera look expensive and stylish. All buttons and wheels are made of high quality aluminum. The camera has many adjustments and settings, which is convenient when you need to select something special to get a beautiful photo. The technical data of the camera corresponds to advanced developments.

Advantages

Olympus PEN-F is a clear demonstration that a spectacular retro look can combine the advanced technical capabilities of our time. The price is 90,000 rubles.

General preparatory information

Let me start with the fact that I couldn’t find a single article on the Internet that comprehensively covered the mirrorless camera market in 2015 (maybe I didn’t search well J). Of all the variety of materials, in my opinion, the most sensible review of mirrorless cameras was made by Mike Toptygin on Youtube. His recommendations formed the basis for the list of system cameras to be evaluated in this article. I would like to immediately warn the reader about the somewhat one-sided information presented - first of all, the author pursued personal goals and attention was paid specifically to models potentially suitable for his requirements. Models that fall out of the author’s field of vision are by no means worse, and perhaps even better, than the author’s choice - they simply do not fit the criteria for a specific purchase. Also, the article will not provide detailed technical characteristics of the models and descriptions - all this information is available in fairly detailed form in the form of reviews on the Internet. The article is rather an initial guide to brands and their features, designed to help the reader save time at the first stage of selection - choosing a manufacturer.

This is what the initial list of models under consideration looked like. *At the end of the article you will find the final list.

In English, the name of this type of camera is most often used as MDC - Mirrorless Digital Cameras. Also, other abbreviations are often used

best mirrorless camera 2015

And here, so to speak, is the “people's world rating” - the top cameras used by users of the popular flickr.com photo bank. Since I am choosing a camera on a limited budget, the rating of previous years 2013, 2014, which, as a rule, lose a lot in value, will be interesting.

The fierce competition is forcing manufacturers to equip their cameras with ever higher technological innovations. Who is doing well? Global trends in 2014 show Sony and Fuji expanding their market share, while Panasonic and Olympus' share is declining. Unfortunately, I could not find data for 2015. (Perhaps some of the readers have such information - I would be grateful for your comment).

The popularity of system mirrorless cameras is growing every day (2015 showed this). For example, in many South Asian (Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, etc.) countries, the percentage of mirrorless cameras reaches or exceeds 50% of the market for all cameras! In quantitative terms, mirrorless cameras have already overtaken DSLR cameras in Asia.

So I need system camera(in simple words - mirrorless) with a relatively large matrix (more than 1") - for high-quality printing of posters in A1-A2 format, with a rotating screen - for creative purposes (for example, photographing “from the floor” or discreetly photographing people from the waist or through a telephoto), with acceptable video quality at in insufficient lighting (Full HD 1920×1080, 30 fps), with a mount designed for a large fleet of optics and allowing the use of manual optics from third-party manufacturers, up to the optics of film cameras. Cost – up to 400 USD , used option is possible.

  • For reference: Briefly about the sizes of matrices used in mirrorless cameras

Fujifilm, Sony, Canon and Samsung have sensor with crop 1,5 ; at Panasonic and Olympus– Micro Four Thirds system – crop 2.0; Nikon2.7x; Pentax4.7x.

At the beginning of autumn 2015, mirrorless cameras were produced by the following companies (brief reasons for the first selection are given in parentheses)

  • Canon– ignoring, until 2015, the direction of system mirrorless cameras. An extremely weak M1 model, which for a long time represented the entire line of Canon mirrorless cameras, and a very good M3 model - just appeared, but unacceptable in price (-)
  • Fuji– a leader in the class of top-end mirrorless cameras. When many “wrote off” Fuji as scrap, Fujifilm “resurrected from the ashes” by entering the market with excellent system cameras, unconditionally securing its leading position in this segment. (+)
  • Leica– holds on in the market thanks to the legendary quality of optics and the excellent quality of its cameras. Insanely expensive, with outstanding shooting parameters, but with poor functionality in modern conditions. (-)
  • Nikon– were one of the first to stake a claim on the mirrorless camera market. The Nikon 1 series are excellent cameras, but not designed to compete with SLR cameras, primarily due to the small size of the base matrix - 1" (13.2 × 8.8 mm). Unfortunately, it is not suitable as a second camera for the main SLR. A feature of the entire series is the fastest and most accurate autofocus in its class. (-)
  • Olympus– the company is seriously developing the direction of system mirrorless cameras, right up to models for professionals. The result is magnificent models capable of competing equally in the top. (+)
  • Panasonic– a leader in the field of cameras capable of shooting professional video, including system cameras. The shortcomings of mirrorless cameras of previous years, in terms of photo quality, have been corrected in modern models. (+)
  • Pentax– the model range makes you smile (emphasis on the color options of the case) and is designed for consumers of soap dishes. (-)
  • Ricoh– a number of unsuccessful experiments with mirrorless cameras. (-)
  • Samsung- rushes into the ranks of leaders, releasing models that increasingly frighten competitors. I apologize to Samsung fans, but this is a matter of personal preference - I don’t want a camera with that name (-)
  • Sony– one of the leaders in the mirrorless camera market. Models for every taste and level, including system units with a full-format matrix! (+)

So we decided on the brands: Fujifilm, Olympus, Panasonic, Sony

Now, brief thoughts about each and in general (for convenience, a summary table with the necessary data on the preferred models is provided - 410 Kb!, click to enlarge):

Comparative table of mirrorless system cameras, according to selected parameters
  • Fujifilm– X-T1, Fujifilm– X-E2 – top models of excellent quality and consumer characteristics. The main disadvantage is the lack of affordability. The price tag for these models starts around $800-1000. Used ones do not cost much less, since they recently entered the market. One of the available models Fuji X-M1 is still unavailable (12,000 UAH for body). We can only hope for chance - “given without consultation” J
  • Olympus– Olympus has 2 series of excellent mirrorless cameras – PEN and OMD. Both series are high level, although the OMD line is considered a higher class.

The 'Pen E-Px' cameras, where x is the serial number, are considered the senior models of the 'Olympus Pen' line. ‘Pen E-PLx’ - lightweight models (prefix ‘L’ from the word ‘Light’, i.e. ‘Light’). 'Pen E-PMx' - the simplest models in a miniature case (prefix 'M' from the word 'Mini'). Models 'OM-D' - cameras that resemble old film Olympus OM in appearance, the letter 'D' in the name 'OM-D' means their digital essence ('D' - 'Digital' i.e. 'Digital').

The Micro Four Thirds mount is recognized by experts as the most successful among mirrorless cameras. In addition, the presence of a huge range of optics for this mount makes the purchase of an Olympus mirrorless camera very attractive for professionals. The 4/3″ matrix, almost the same size as APS-C, is a compromise option for competition with SLR cameras. Innovative solutions such as five-axis stabilization on the matrix, hybrid contrast-phase autofocus or a 16-megapixel Live MOS sensor without an optical low-pass filter place Olympus system systems among solid market leaders.

  • Panasonic– several series of mirrorless cameras for different consumers:

GF is the youngest and most affordable line. All models are compact and lightweight, without a built-in viewfinder, with a touch screen and a minimum of hardware keys and control dials.

GX is the premium segment of Panasonic's compact mirrorless cameras. There are already a lot more mechanical controls to be seen, the body is of a higher quality, and you can expect at least some kind of battery grip or right-hand ridge.

G is a camera for those who do not want to put ergonomics at the expense of size. Here you will definitely find an electronic viewfinder, many controls and function keys located on the body. The body will resemble a mini-DSLR with a large handle and a capacious battery.

GH is the top line of MFT mirrorless cameras. It is the latest model of this kind that will be discussed in our review today - the Panasonic GH3.

  • DMC-G:. Models: G1, G2, G10, G3, G5, G6.
  • DMC-GH: Models: GH1, GH2, GH3, GH4
  • DMC-GX: Model: GX1, GX7
  • DMC-GF: Models: GF1, GF2, GF3, GF5.

FujifilmOlympusPanasonicSony— who to give preference to? This question would not be urgent if the purchase were not limited to the amount of $400. If you don’t limit yourself to funds, then purchasing top models from each brand will completely satisfy all the needs of even a discerning photographer:

  • U Fujifilm this is a model XT1 from $1700 per whale
  • U Olympus -OlympusOM-DE-M1— from $1600 per whale
  • U Panasonic - GH4 - from $1900 per whale
  • U Sony -SONYA7MKII, A7R— from $1600 per whale

We will not dwell in detail on the characteristics of these models - they do not fall into our field of choice due to their high cost. What decent (whale) can you choose for $400? But nothing 😀 In this price segment you can only buy system cameras from the Nikon 1 series, which we immediately abandoned because of their small matrix.

What remains is a look at the secondary market for mirrorless cameras. But here the situation is no better - good modern cameras with a rotating touch screen, WI-FI, and viewfinder are not much cheaper than new ones. There remains a choice of obsolete models. It’s not so bad here anymore, and you can pick up a model that was considered the flagship in the line just a couple of years ago.

For example, I managed to find:

  • Sony Alpha 5000– for $282 (Kyiv, Darnitsky ) 2014
  • Fujifilm X-E1 body silver – for $400 (Kyiv) 2012
  • Olympus PEN E-P5 – for $434 (Odessa) 2013
  • PANASONIC G 6 — for $349 (Uzhgorod) 2013
  • Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH2 kit –$450 (Khmelnitsky) 2010

But only the models came into my field of vision:

  • PANASONIC GM5
  • PANASONIC GX 7
  • PANASONIC G 6
  • PANASONIC G 7
  • Olympus E-PL7
  • Olympus OM-D E-M5
  • Olympus OM-D E-M10
  • Fujifilm X-E1
  • Olympus PEN E-P5
  • Sony NEX-5r, 5t
  • Sony NEX-6
  • SONY A 5100
  • SONY A 6000

Any of these models has a rotating screen, in most cases a touch screen. All models (except Olympus OM-D E-M5 and Fujifilm X-E1) have WI-FI. Most models have an electronic viewfinder. Everyone has a “big” matrix. Also, all models have an advanced external settings control system. Everyone shoots Full HD video. Well main criterion– the quality of photos is not inferior to SLR cameras in the advanced segment!

Approaching the reality of $400, we can say that the most desirable purchase of a kit system camera will be any of the listed Sony cameras (NEX-5 can already be picked up for this money, NEX-5R, NEX-5T, NEX-6 - depending on your luck)

NEX-5R, NEX-5T - essentially a different camera with additional external controls, which is closer to the NEX-6 than to the NEX-5. And is one of the most beloved cameras in Japan.

The second priority is the Olympus PEN E-P5 camera. (went out of sale on the same day)

The third contender was the PANASONIC G6, which came very close to our budget.

We can write endlessly about the merits of each chosen model, so we will let the reader evaluate our choice for himself. We have only outlined directions and priorities - the final choice is always up to the user!

This article will focus on mirrorless cameras. They are called so because their design does not include a bulky mirror and an optical viewfinder. In the design of classic DSLRs, a mirror located behind the lens at an angle of 45 degrees to the optical axis allows you to observe through the viewfinder the image obtained directly through the optics installed on the camera. Its presence does not affect the quality of the image (at the moment of shooting it generally rises and covers the optical viewfinder). Due to the large size of the mirror itself, the distance between the matrix and the lens increases, which in turn complicates the optical design of the lenses, increases the size of the camera itself, making it more bulky and noisy.

DSLR or mirrorless camera: what to choose

Why is a DSLR camera better than a mirrorless camera? For a long time SLR cameras were the most popular among amateur photographers, since the advantages still outweighed the disadvantages. However, progress does not stand still, and modern digital technologies have allowed manufacturers to create a new class of cameras. Mirrorless system cameras have absorbed all the advantages of a DSLR camera in the form of ease of sighting, speed of electronics, and the ability to change optics. At the same time, the absence of an optical viewfinder and mirror allows the cameras themselves to be made smaller, lighter, with a simpler and more efficient design. Initially born as a niche product, this class of cameras is gaining more and more new fans every year, and the number of models on the market is growing like an avalanche. In all this diversity, it’s easy to get confused!

System cameras with interchangeable lenses

In this article, we have selected the most interesting, in our opinion, representatives of mirrorless cameras or, as they are also called, compact system cameras with interchangeable lenses. We will tell you about those models that, in terms of their characteristics, have already come very close to the performance of SLR cameras, or even surpassed them. Mirrorless cameras can be of interest to a wide range of people. For example, those who want to take a step forward from the usual compact soap dish or mobile phone. The intuitive controls of most of these cameras allow you to become familiar with all the basics of photography while remaining in your comfort zone. They are also suitable for those amateur photographers who have a large fleet of old high-quality photo optics left over from film times. Many companies produce adapters for different mounts, through which you can install and use your favorite lenses on the camera. They are also often chosen as a backup or second camera by many DSLR camera owners, and sometimes even switch from a DSLR to a mirrorless system entirely!

And another important point: for some mirrorless models (for example, Olympus) the price has practically not increased. As a result of the December price increase, other models did not increase as much as SLR cameras.

Olympus mirrorless cameras

If size and weight matter most to you, then you should look towards mirrorless cameras from Olympus. In their cameras they use a Micro Four Thirds size matrix (approximately 17.3x13 mm). This solution allows us to produce cameras and optics of small sizes. At the same time, the Micro Four Thirds matrix is quite large and provides image quality close to APS-C matrices. In terms of picture quality, Olympus squeezes literally everything out of 4/3 sensors in their cameras! Among the rich Olympus line, I would like to highlight two OM-D E-M10 and OM-D E-M1

In 2014, it received numerous awards, including from EISA, DPpreview and TIPA, as a camera with an ideal price-quality ratio in its class. The OM-D E-M10 is the continuation of the OM-D series, which has captivated the world with its classic design combined with the latest advances from Olympus. The camera is very fast. Autofocus speed is only 0.06 seconds, and RAW shooting speed is 8 frames per second. Let's add, judging by the enormous possibilities for customizing the interface, ease of manual and semi-automatic control, shooting in Full-HD format, and you will get a camera that outperforms most SLR cameras, but takes up much less space.

The big brother of the E-M10, the flagship of the Olympus Micro Four Thirds mirrorless system. Every facet of this camera is tailored for reporting and has a rich arsenal of professional solutions. Improved electronic viewfinder with a field of view larger than many DSLRs. Unique 5-axis image stabilization for photos and videos: compensates for shake in three planes, as well as rotational moments. Cheetah-fast hybrid autofocus. Dust- and moisture-proof frost-resistant housing. This camera is also available with a large number of additional accessories that expand its capabilities even further. Among the available accessories, I would like to note the MMF-3 adapter, which allows you to install and use all the functions of 4/3 format optics (such optics were used in Olympus and Panasonic DSLRs in the recent past). Autofocus with such optics will work using phase detection sensors located on the matrix.

Fujifilm mirrorless cameras

The next manufacturer, which also focused its efforts on the production of mirrorless cameras and ignored DSLRs, is the Japanese corporation Fujifilm. The main advantage of Fujifilm is its unique matrix and optics designed for it. And this is not surprising, because Fujifilm engineers have adapted all their experience and knowledge accumulated over many years of improving color emulsions to digital technologies. The result of their work was a matrix with X-Trans technology.

This technology is interesting because the pixels on the sensor are arranged in a non-linear manner and due to this there is no need to use a low-pass filter. The picture acquires its own unique charm, as well as exceptional sharpness in the smallest details. All these details can be captured using proprietary optics. Among the cameras from the Fujifilm line, I would like to highlight the following mirrorless models.

It is the most affordable model in the Fujifilm camera line with X-Trans technology. It differs from its older brothers primarily in size, as well as in the absence of an electronic viewfinder and less developed ergonomics of the controls (fewer buttons). The camera is available in three different body colors, has a rotating screen, Wi-Fi functionality and is an inexpensive entry ticket to the world of the Fujifilm system.

This is Fujifulm's bid to play on the same field as the Olympus OM-D E-M1. In the field of reportage cameras in direct competition with DSLRs. The model belongs to the premium segment and is currently the most advanced system mirrorless camera from Fujifilm. Outwardly, it is similar to a DSLR, but instead of an optical viewfinder, an electronic one is used, which, due to its size and quality, is practically indistinguishable from an optical one. The camera body is dust- and moisture-proof, frost-resistant and has classic mechanical dials for controlling shutter speed and exposure compensation (the aperture on most Fujifilm lenses is mounted on a ring on the lens). It uses an X-Trans CMOS II matrix with ISO increased to 51200. New processors and electronics have virtually minimized turn-on time and the interval between shots, resulting in a camera with extremely fast response times. Phase detection autofocus with subject motion prediction allows you to shoot up to 8 frames per second. For this model, as in the case of Olympus, Fujifilm has released a large line of additional accessories and new dust- and water-resistant lenses.

Sony mirrorless cameras

When talking about mirrorless cameras, we cannot fail to mention Sony Corporation. Among the achievements in this market segment, I would like to highlight two models: the Sony A6000 with the most advanced autofocus and the Sony A7 II with a 5-axis optical stabilizer based on matrix shift, implemented for the first time on a full frame.

This is a 24MP APS-C mirrorless camera with E-mount, available in three colors. At first glance, you will be struck by its thoughtful ergonomics. The camera fits well in the hand, has many customizable controls, and a well-thought-out interface. But the most interesting thing is its autofocus system with 4D focus technology. Not only did it surpass even Sony SLR cameras in speed, but also guidance is carried out in four dimensions: horizontal, vertical, depth and time (meaning predictive algorithms that allow you to predict the movement of an object at the next moment in time). Other features include an extended sensor sensitivity range up to ISO 25600, a high-resolution intelligent electronic OLED viewfinder, Wi-Fi and NFC protocols for data transfer. Another interesting fact is the ability to download various applications that improve and expand the capabilities of the camera from the PlayMemories Camera Apps brand store.

With an E mount and a full-frame sensor, it stands somewhat apart from all mirrorless cameras. This is the world's first camera with a 5-axis optical image stabilizer implemented for a full-frame (24x36 mm) sensor. The stabilizer will work with the “native” optics for this model with E-mount, and with optics from Sony and Minolta DSLRs with A-mount (you will need an appropriate adapter), and with any other lenses installed via adapters. If the adapter electronics allow the camera to understand which lens is being used, the stabilizer will adjust to the lens automatically. If the lens or adapter has no electronics at all, then the focal length of the lens will need to be specified manually.

The camera's autofocus is hybrid, extremely accurate and fast, with the ability to predict movement. Videographers will also appreciate this camera, as it has a full range of video recording functions and outputs video in Full HD format with a bitrate of up to 50 Mbps. Let's add here a convenient ergonomic design, a high degree of freedom regarding control settings, ease of wireless data transfer and convenient downloading of additional tools through the proprietary PlayMemories Camera Apps and we get a mirrorless camera with limitless possibilities, and most importantly - with a full-frame matrix.

On this page, you'll find the best mirrorless cameras on the market today, ranging from entry-level model options with enticing benefits from traditional DSLRs. From a technical point of view, all compact point-and-shoot cameras can be classified as mirrorless cameras, but on this page, we will look at models with a large sensor that can compete with DSLRs in functionality, quality and control.

We will discuss system cameras with both interchangeable and fixed lenses. But, again, they are all united by the presence of a large sensor, high-quality optics, a large amount of control, decent functionality and, of course, the absence of a mirror. Many experts are convinced that these cameras are the future of photography, so if you are thinking about purchasing a mirrorless camera, then this is a promising direction.

In this list, we are not covering Sony digital cameras with a translucent mirror (SLT), as by definition they are not included in our category, but we will pay attention to them in other reviews.

Olympus E-PM1

The Olympus E-PM1 is one of the most affordable system cameras available today. With its release, the company expanded the range of models designed for those consumers who have outgrown the point-and-shoot camera or are looking for a more portable alternative to a budget DSLR. This camera is smaller, lighter and much more affordable than the more complex E-PL3 and E-P3 models. But don't let the price and position in the range fool you. The E-PM1 features the same 12-megapixel sensor as the more expensive PEN cameras. It also features a full-size hot shoe for accessories and, like all Olympus models, it boasts built-in stabilization that works with whatever lens you're using. Merging large manual controls and the ability to use auto mode, depending on your preferences, the E-PM2 has it all at a balanced price. Plus, it's one of the most affordable ways to enjoy the vast catalog of Micro Four Thirds lenses.

pros : Built-in stabilization, 1080i video recording, hot shoe, affordable price, wide range of compatible lenses.
Minuses : Flash is supplied, but not built-in. There is no touch screen.
All in all : An affordable system camera that doesn't compromise.

Nikon J1

Panasonic GX1

Panasonic GX1 is a 16-megapixel compact system camera of the Micro Four Thirds standard. It's quite a pocket camera without a built-in viewfinder, but unlike recent GF models, it's aimed squarely at enthusiasts. So it has a touch screen, grip options, and plenty of settings controls. It also features a pop-up flash and a standard hot shoe mount that you can use to mount an external flash or an optional electronic viewfinder should you need it. Like all modern Micro Four Thirds models, the GX1 uses non-phase detection contrast autofocus, but it is very fast. HDR fans will be happy to find that the camera is capable of seven frames of bracketing. On the other hand, there is no jack for an external microphone, the screen is fixed, and unlike the Olympus PEN and OMD models, there is no built-in image stabilization. But in general, the quality of 1080i photos and videos is inherited from the G3, which indicates a high, user-satisfying level. This model is an excellent choice for a working holiday due to its compact size, extensive control and compatibility with a large catalog of Micro Four Thirds lenses.

pros: Fast focusing, touch screen, wide catalog of lenses.
Minuses: The screen is not tiltable, there is no microphone jack and 1080p video, and there is no built-in stabilization.
All in all: Great for enthusiasts who want a lot of control in a small package.

Sony RX100

Olympus E-PL5

Canon EOS M

Sony NEX 5R

The NEX-5R sits in the middle of Sony's range of compact mirrorless cameras. It uses a DSLR-sized sensor in a much smaller package. Like all NEX models, the 5R features an APS-C sensor, which is popular in most budget mid-range DSLRs. The 5R sensor has a resolution of 16 megapixels and video can be recorded in 1080p. Sony has added the ability to tilt vertically to this model's 3-inch touchscreen for easy composition from unusual angles. Like most Sony cameras, the NEX-5R also boasts a wide range of innovative shooting modes that can combine multiple images to reduce noise or create breathtaking panoramic shots. The camera provides a manual focus guide for video recording. The frame rate for continuous shooting is 10 frames per second. As an innovation compared to its predecessor, the 5R features a Wi-Fi module that allows you to upload images from the camera directly to social networks, and you can also control the camera remotely using a smartphone. We also note that hybrid autofocus is fast and accurate. If you can live without Wi-Fi and autofocus improvements, then consider what this model's predecessor, the NEX 5N, offers.

pros: Large APS-C sensor, tilting touch screen; 1080p video recording; Wi-Fi; hybrid autofus.
Minuses: No hot shoe for optional accessories.
All in all: One of the most feature-rich and best mirrorless cameras.

Sony NEX 6

The Sony NEX 6 sits between the NEX 5R and the top-of-the-line NEX 7, and in many ways it's a cross between the two. Like all NEX series cameras, it packs an APS-C sensor, but to avoid stepping on the flagship's toes, Sony equipped the NEX 6 with the same 16-megapixel sensor as the 5R, allowing the NEX 7 to reign supreme with 24 megapixels. Externally, the NEX 6 is very similar to the NEX 7 with its tilting screen, high-resolution OLED viewfinder and pop-up flash. Although magnesium alloy is not used as the body material for it, and a microphone jack is not provided here. The camera allows you to switch between PASM and Auto modes simply by turning the dial. Like the NEX 7, there's a standard hot shoe that makes it easy to attach external accessories. Also, like the NEX 7, it also has built-in Wi-Fi, which can transfer images to a smartphone or directly to social networks. Unfortunately, the 5R lacks a touchscreen. However, for many, the NEX 6 will be more attractive than the NEX 7, especially when paired with the new 16-50mm zoom lens. So think about whether you really need 24 megapixels and a magnesium alloy body rather than a plastic 16 MP one.

pros: OLED viewfinder, adjustable screen angle, standard hot shoe, Wi-Fi, hybrid autofocus.
Minuses: Missing is the NEX 7's 24 megapixels, mic jack and rugged body, as well as the 5R's touchscreen.
All in all: If you're happy with 16 megapixels and a plastic shell, then you probably won't need anything more than the NEX 6.

Sony NEX 7

The NEX-7 is Sony's flagship compact system camera. Like all NEX cameras, it uses an APS-C sized sensor, but unlike previous models, it's 24MP. This is the first NEX model with a built-in electronic viewfinder, which, by the way, is one of the best. There is also a pop-up flash, a hot shoe and a microphone. Additionally, you get 10fps burst speed, 1080p video recording at 50/60P, and a vari-angle screen. And it's all packed into a body that's even more compact than traditional DSLRs. It can be stated that the NEX 7 is one of the best mirrorless cameras available today, although it is worth comparing with the Olympus E-M5 and Panasonic GH3, which now have a much wider selection of native lenses and weather sealing, which the E-M5 also has adds built-in image stabilization. If having 24 megapixels and a microphone jack isn't important to you, then you might want to consider the new Sony NEX-6, which adds Wi-Fi, a mode dial, and a standard hot shoe.

pros: Excellent electronic viewfinder. Large selection of video modes. Mode dial.
Minuses: No weather seal. Basic bracketing.
All in all: One of the best high-end system cameras.

Olympus OMD EM5

The OMD E-M5 is Olympus's first mirrorless compact camera with a built-in electronic viewfinder and weather sealing. It is designed in the style of the OM series, which was extremely popular in the seventies for its 35mm SLR cameras. But inside the E-M5 has quite modern content based on the Micro Four Thirds standard. It uses a 16-megapixel sensor. And the camera offers 9fps shooting, 1080p video recording, a tilting 3-inch OLED touchscreen, and built-in 5-axis image stabilization that works with any lens. Olympus also claims to have the world's fastest autofocus. Some may consider the lack of a built-in flash and microphone jack to be a drawback, but overall this is one of the nicest compact system cameras around. You can compare it with Sony NEX-7 and Panasonic GH3.

pros: Weather sealed, large viewfinder and screen, built-in 5-axis stabilizer, wide catalog of lenses.
Minuses: No built-in flash and microphone jack; The screen tilts but doesn't flip over.
All in all: Truly meets the needs of discerning mirrorless camera owners.

Fujifilm XPro1

Fujifilm X-Pro1 is a mirrorless camera aimed at advanced enthusiasts. It has a retro design with an innovative hybrid viewfinder and a 16-megapixel X-Trans APS-C sized sensor. But it doesn't use the traditional Bayer color filter. FujiFilm uses its own unique color filter system to provide more accurate results. Traditional analog controls are also available. Moreover, instead of just one, the camera offers a choice of three zooms. Autofocus and video modes are unremarkable and there are a limited number of native lenses, making the E-M5 or NEX-7 more flexible in this regard, but the quality, style and degree of control with the X-Pro1 is sure to please photographers. And while it's more expensive than most mirrorless cameras, this camera is much cheaper than the Leica M9. And if you value the image quality and lenses of the XPro-1, but can do without a hybrid viewfinder, then consider the new, smaller and more affordable X-E1 model.

During testing, the system camera primarily attracts attention due to its light weight. Even the best mirrorless camera weighs very little compared to DSLR cameras.

The reason for this is the abandonment of some large and heavy camera parts, most notably the mirror system. Accordingly, the system camera has very compact dimensions. It does not have an optical viewfinder; the display on the rear panel is used to compose the frame. Mirrorless cameras starting from the mid-range have an electronic viewfinder.

Compared to SLR cameras, system cameras have a number of characteristic advantages, especially when it comes to image preview. Even before you press the shutter, you'll know what the finished photo will look like - including all filters and effects. The disadvantage of system cameras is increased power consumption, since at least one screen is on all the time.

The best mirrorless cameras in a comparison test

We will tell you below about the current leader of our test and the optimal model in terms of price-quality ratio.

Test leader: Samsung NX1

No other APS-C mirrorless camera offers such high speed and high resolution. 28 megapixels make it possible to shoot high-resolution photos, and the 15 frames per second speed can be interesting even for sports reporters. Rich equipment and the ability to shoot video in Ultra-HD format make the camera almost perfect.

Average retail price: 65,000 rubles (without lens).

Best choice in terms of price-quality ratio: Olympus OM-D E-M10

Olympus E-M10 - a good camera at a good price

Small, convenient and a real hit in terms of price-quality ratio, the Olympus OM-D E-M10, although it has a 4/3 matrix, in terms of image quality (sharpness and noise), the 16-megapixel camera can compete with cameras with a larger matrix size. The only negative is that as photosensitivity increases, the detail of the photograph begins to suffer. But the advantages are a sharp electronic viewfinder, all sorts of additional options, such as a folding screen, Wi-Fi and high-speed autofocus.

Average retail price: 35,500 rubles (including the “whale” lens 14-42 mm).
