Top 10 Plants with the Largest Leaves

  • 13.02.2024

Ah, spring is coming! The soul no longer asks, but demands sun, light, warmth, greenery! Especially greenery - I'm tired of the winter landscape, my eyes are looking for a new, bright color! And now all the plants will rush to delight us with their charms, rise, turn green, and bloom!
Every corner of the planet is rich in its own special flora, but have you ever wondered what kind of amazing plants live where we have not been? Impenetrable swamps, wild jungles, endless dense forests - what secrets do they keep? , fragrant and repulsive - we can talk about them endlessly, but today I want wild, stormy greenery. Lots of greenery! And where to look for it, if not in plants with the largest leaves? We will disturb them!
1 Balaka

The list of the largest-leaved representatives of the flora opens with a plant with a funny name - Balaka. It grows exclusively in the warmest part of one of the Fiji islands and nowhere else, so few people know that it is a tree. The average length of a balaka sheet is 1.5 meters! But even this seems not enough for the plant - on each side of the leaf there are a couple of dozen smaller leaves.
The Australian, Aponogeton elongata, is stepping on the heels of a representative of an endangered species. For its bright green, slightly wavy leaves, the 1.5 m mark is the maximum.

2

We return to Fiji, and what do we see? Slightly less rare, but with slightly larger leaves, is the Pritchardia tree. This species will not please us with its prevalence either, but it grows on at least several islands of Fiji. The leaves of pritchardia are covered with a special waxy coating, which makes them not very bright, but their maximum length reaches 1.8 m - an average human height.

3

So we got to the famous water lily. Named after the Queen of England, and extremely popular for greenhouse propagation, Victoria amazonica is simply beautiful. Its two-meter leaves spread across the water in amazing saucers that can support quite a significant weight.
However, Victoria is not the only one that can boast of this size: Gunnera rougha and the rare, little-studied coccolaba from the Rio Madeira River basin - both have leaves reaching 2 meters.

4

From world history, we all remember Otto von Bismarck and his unification activities in Germany. It is in honor of this man that the only palm tree of its kind, Bismarckia, is named. Its homeland is Madagascar, but this did not stop it from taking root as a houseplant. However, it reaches its real height only in natural habitats; only in Madagascar its leaves reach 3 m! Not inferior to her is Ravenala, also from the island of Madagascar, and also the only representative of her kind. Its leaves are the same length, only the shape is elongated.

5 Amazing Kamchatka flora

In the middle of our list is not a specific plant, but rather the climate of one corner of the planet - Kamchatka. Not distinguished by the richness of flora in general, Kamchatka has become a promised land for all kinds of herbs. Shelomaynik, ostrich, meadowsweet, angelica and kakalia, a grass with the tasty name hogweed and many others - they all reach 4 meters here! A rider can easily hide in such a field!

Kamchatka grass, of course, amazed us, but let’s return to the trees, or rather, to our beloved palm trees. And, believe it or not, back to Fiji! Fijians have a unique opportunity to admire the magnificent representatives of the flora, and they do not share it with anyone! Their trees categorically refuse to grow in other parts of the globe, or even threaten to disappear altogether! Metroxylon (what a name!) is a palm tree, it is interesting not only because its leaves reach 5 meters, but also because these very leaves die as soon as the fruits of the tree ripen. And soon the whole plant dies. Sad…

We have all seen coconuts on store shelves, many have even tried them. But few people think about the fact that these are nothing more than the fruits of a palm tree, an amazing palm tree, I must say! Unlike most of the above-mentioned positions, the prevalence of this tree is so high that it has not yet been established exactly where the first representatives of this species appeared. In addition, the abundance and viability of coconut palm fruits determine a pleasant price for us. Oops, we've gone off topic - the leaves of a coconut palm are six meters long! It’s good that we sell already picked fruits!

8

Let's not be surprised, it's a palm tree again. And not an ordinary palm tree, but a Royal one! This second name is quite logical - although the palm tree looks the same as most others, its size is truly royal. Naturally, we are interested not in the 30-meter bare gray trunk, but in the seven-meter green, fresh leaves!

9

Amazingly, among the tall trees, the amazing (that’s what the name says) Velvichia quietly and unobtrusively appears! She is the only one of her kind not only in her kind and family, but also in order - remember biology. This relict plant is truly amazing. The amazing Velvichia grows in the Namib Desert, and absorbs moisture from the fogs of the Atlantic coast. Its leaves grow long, majestically, and reach, attention, 8 meters! Although there is nothing royal about them to the touch - they look more like boards. And how soft the desert can be!

10

And the palm tree completes our list by a huge margin! I guess no one is surprised? These tall representatives of the plant world brazenly occupied not only most of the positions on this list, but also occupied first place, leaving no one even a chance.
So, we pass the palm to the Rafia palm! She deserves such a tautology, because the length of her leaves is as much as 25 meters!
Palm trees, palm trees on the shore... So what am I talking about? Oh yes, I was dreaming about spring greenery! We urgently pack our bags, and while spring is in no hurry to please us, we go to where there are palm trees and a lot of other greenery! Bright sunshine to you!
